The Shadow by Marylou
I woke up, out of a deep sleep and opened my eyes to find myself sitting alone, in the dark, on a desk in Social Studies class. The room would’ve been pitch black, if it wasn’t for the one light in the hallway. As I slowly rose up from the desk, in complete shock, I felt a caress of a breeze hit my back, like a breath of the cold winter morning.
“Hello?” I whispered, terrified of what or who, might respond. Thump! Smash! I heard the sound of glass falling & shattering in many pieces, as I nearly fell on my face by flinching so hard. “Hello!” I yelled. No one answered. I got up & started walking towards the door. As I opened it, the halls reeked of a certain smell, like the odor on the bottom of trash cans combined with a fresh mowed lawn. I gagged, holding my nose with disgust, when suddenly, I heard the noise, again. I walked toward the noise, hoping to find someone.
The noise led me to a classroom, filled with books, pencils, computers and an overhead projector. I looked around the room and for a slight second, I saw a figure of a person, standing near the overhead screen. Nothing was there. I walked towards it and stood in front of it. I was puzzled and confused. Then, the overhead went on, making a screeching noise.
I ran-I ran so fast, paused & caught my breath. By now a lot of things were running through my mind: Why am I here at school? What was that noise? How did the overhead just turn on like that? And probably the most obvious question of them all, am I alone?
I thought to myself there better be an exit around here somewhere. I know there’s an exit. I ran again, through every hall, and every door, but there was no exit. Turning my head slightly to the left…and…I saw somebody…or shall I say something! It was the figure of a person. But this wasn’t an ordinary person. It was like seeing a shadow…of a girl. She stepped closer and closer to me. “Aaaahhhh!” She screamed, being so close I could almost feel her body temperature. I couldn’t even move-I was so scared. Then, she disappeared. I still couldn’t move. I can’t believe what I saw after that…I woke up, crying. “Whew!” I said. “It was a dream.” Then, I looked in the mirror and… saw her sitting beside me. I got a good glimpse of her this time. She had gray hair, stitches coming down her face, and a grin.
The question for you is…Who was she?
